Wachau Routes: Arts-based
perspectives on a riverine landscape

Traffic routes in the focus of art and landscape architecture

Traffic routes are characteristic landscape elements of the Wachau World Heritage Region. The ongoing expansion of transport routes is accompanied by changes to the landscape. The continuous artistic engagement with the Wachau has helped to focus attention on the scenic beauty of the Austrian region. This special quality heightened awareness of the need for the creative integration of transport routes into the landscape.

The Wachau Routes project takes up the tradition of artistic engagement and places the traffic routes at the centre of the treatment. The interweaving of arts-based and landscape architectural research methods contributes to a holistic understanding of the Wachau.
